Obituary for Mary Emma Mitchell Mary Emma Mitchell was born on December 10, 1930, in Rome, Georgia, to Emma and William Butler. As the eldest of three sisters, she embraced the role of a loving sibling to Ethel Williams and Mattie Banks, both of whom preceded her in death. On February 20, 2025, Mary peacefully departed this life, surrounded by her loving family. Mary’s family relocated from Rome, Georgia, to Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated from Southwestern High School in 1948. Determined to further her education, she attended Wayne State University, earning her degree in 1965. She then embarked on a rewarding career as a Medical Technologist with the City of Detroit, where she dedicated her skills and compassion to serving her community. Mary married Douglas Lee Mitchell, and they were blessed with their beloved son, Douglas Jr., affectionately known as “Dougie.” Her husband, Douglas Sr., preceded her in death. Mary was a woman of many talents and passions. She found joy in sewing, knitting, and cooking. She loved to dance and was an enthusiastic card player. Her passion for Bridge grew over the years, leading her to become an esteemed member of the Detroit Bridge Unit, where she held numerous executive roles and earned the respect of her peers. Alongside her sister Mattie, she often catered events for the club, and her famous “punch bowl cake” became a favorite treat among family and friends. Faith played a central role in Mary’s life. She was an active member of St. Stephen’s AME Church, where she faithfully served the Sunday School Program for many years. Her commitment to her faith extended to nurturing her “babies”—Tiffany, Michiko, and Lewis—ensuring they grew up with strong spiritual foundations. Fondly known as Aunt Mary to many, she created a warm and welcoming home where all who entered felt loved and embraced. Within the walls of her beloved church, Mary met Willie Shy, with whom she shared a beautiful companionship for many years. Together, they created countless memories, including their love for traveling and exploring new places. Mary’s legacy lives on through her devoted son, Douglas Jr.; her loving nieces, Renae and Tracey (Lewis Sr.); her nephew, Ronald; cherished great-nieces, Tiffany and Michiko; her one and only great-nephew, Lewis Jr.; and “the baby” her great-great-nephew, Tyler. Mary’s departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her. Her life was a testament to love, family, and the joy of giving. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary woman, let us remember the joy she brought into our lives and the wisdom she imparted. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her kindness and grace. Rest in peace, Mary Emma Mitchell.
