Kenneth Maceo Slater

Kenneth Maceo Slater, 55, was called home to be with the Lord on July 26, 2025. He was born at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Hersalese Slater and Maceo Small Jr. From the very beginning, Ken’s gentle spirit and wit set him apart, and those who had the pleasure of knowing him were forever touched by his warmth, kindness, and loyalty. Ken graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and soon after followed his heart relocating to California, a place he grew to love deeply. He lived in the suburbs of Los Angeles for nearly a decade, embracing the easygoing West Coast lifestyle. California remained a cherished chapter in his life. In 1997, Ken returned to Michigan to be by his brother’s side after the passing of their beloved mother, Hersalese Slater. That decision marked the beginning of an even deeper bond between Ken and his brother, Mikel Slater, a bond that would carry them through life’s joys and challenges. They were not only siblings, but the closest of friends grounded in and unwavering support for one another. Ken made his home in the Madison Heights area of metro Detroit for the past 15 years, choosing to live close to his brother so they could spend time together, and continue building a lifetime of memories. Ken worked for several years at EDS before joining the OnStar division at General Motors run by Teleperformance company Inc., where he spent the past decade as a skilled Data Analyst. His colleagues appreciated his dedication, intelligence, and calm presence. Ken was also a devoted brother-in-law to Linnea Slater, who, along with her family, the Givans, welcomed Ken wholeheartedly into their lives. He became a familiar and loved presence at every family gathering, always eager to be around good food (especially sweets, his favorite) and the warmth of family. In recent years, Ken enjoyed getting to know his sister Christa Small, whom he and Mikel connected with a few years ago through their father’s side of the family in Battle Creek, MI. Ken’s passions were simple, great meals, playing video games, and spending quality time with his family. He was a quiet soul who lived with deep loyalty, kindness, and humor. His presence and "quiet cool" brought comfort and joy to everyone lucky enough to know him. Kenneth is survived by his brother, Mikel Slater (Linnea); his sister, Christa Small; his father, Maceo Small Jr.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins on his mother’s side who so loved him. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Hersalese Slater; his grandmother, Vallie Ree Martin; To know Ken was to love him. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his love of laughter, and the deep devotion he had for his brother and family. His memory will live on in the stories we tell about him and the love the lives on of those he touched. We are blessed to have Ken in our lives. Rest peacefully, Ken. You will be missed beyond words.
