Joel Otis Sigmon

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7 Joel Otis Sigmon was born December 3, 1970, in Detroit, Michigan, to the union of Shallmon Sigmon and Thelma Sigmon Scott. He was the youngest of the family’s six children. As a child, Joel was quiet and shy, but he grew into an outgoing man who could connect with people from all walks of life. Joel attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northern High School. He obtained an Associate in Science from Henry Ford Community College and a Bachelor of General Studies with focus areas in Environmental Science, Geology, and Anthropology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn (Go Blue). He also obtained numerous Health & Safety certifications through the MIOSHA Training Institute. In June 2019, Joel began employment with Aecon as a U.S. Environmental Monitor and remained with the company until he was approved for medical leave in September 2021. He was assigned to the Gordie Howe Bridge project where he enjoyed working in the field conducting environmental monitoring and inspecting work areas for compliance with federal environmental regulations. Prior to changing careers and working in Environmental Science, Joel worked in Corporate Fitness for several years where he managed and oversaw daily operations of automotive engineering and manufacturing fitness facilities both as an employee and later as owner and founder of J&M StayFit, LLC. Joel was baptized and accepted Christ at an early age. He enjoyed volunteering with the Athletics department at his home church, Word of Faith International Christian Center, teaching basketball skills and drills to the youth. Additionally, he cherished coaching his sons’ basketball teams where he led them to win multiple league championships. Joel was a man of great strength, perseverance, dedication, and devotion to his family. Joel was preceded in death by his father, Shallmon Sigmon; and sister, Paula Sigmon. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mary; three children, Aaren, Josh, and Chase; beloved mother, Thelma Sigmon Scott; four brothers, Shallmon Mark Sigmon (Rebecca) of Indiana, Durward Sigmon, Andre Sigmon (LaNecia), and Marlon Sigmon of Michigan; parents-in-love, Reverend Leonard and Jean McMillian of Ohio, sisters-in-love Delaine Hampton (Joseph) and Janice McMillian of Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
