Bradley Dyer

Bradley A. Dyer peacefully passed away on March 3, at his home in Southfield, Michigan, listening to his favorite musician John Coltrane with his loved ones by his side. Brad was preceded in death by his wife Carol Dyer, father Wilmer Dyer, mother Hazel Dyer, and sister Lisa Dyer Kropf. Left behind are his daughter Alexis Dyer of Chelsea, Michigan, brother William Dyer and wife Jill Yager of Asheville, NC, nephews Micah Dyer and Sam Kropf of California, and Brad’s partner of decades, Charvette Goss of Royal Oak. Bradley was a 1957 graduate of Oakwood High School and a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Miami University. He was a graduate teaching assistant at Miami University and the University of Michigan. Brad was an honorably discharged Army veteran E4 serving in Europe. After three years of service, he married and enrolled in the English Literature Doctoral Program at the University of Michigan. Brad loved people and believed in the rights of workers. He opened his home for Leader Dog training which his wife Carol introduced into the women’s prison system. He worked with local governments, unions, and community and civic leaders on issues of employment stability. He spent the next 30 years working for the Michigan AFL-CIO and Michigan Human Resources Development Inc. (HRDI), a job he loved and from which he retired in 2015. He developed the concept of prison reentry programs from his years of working and teaching in Michigan prisons. This program is a model that is widely used today. Brad was an avid reader of novels and poetry, reading nearly 100 books a year. Some of his favorite authors included James Lee Burke, John Sanford, Lee Child, and poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Gerard Manley Hopkins. He was a wonderful man who was generous, kind, and thoughtful with a great sense of humor and a sense of adventure. Brad never met a stranger and could strike up an engaging conversation with both young people and adults. Anyone lucky enough to be part of his world is forever changed by his presence. Brad was a lover of jazz music with John Coltrane being one of his favorites. He was a collector of books and jazz records. Brad enjoyed attending jazz concerts throughout the year, especially the yearly Detroit Jazz Festival. He also loved travel and for many years he and his partner would travel to Aruba for fun and relaxation. Brad was a giving man, donating to several charities every year. Brad’s favorite charities include the Jane Goodall Institute, Doctors Without Borders Foundation, and Leader Dogs for the Blind. Brad was a man we loved and admired. He will be missed but his legacy will live on.
