Mrs. Georgia Ann McElroy

Obituary Georgia Ann McElroy, 80 of Detroit Michigan formerly of Cotton Plant Arkansas, was called to her heavenly home on Monday, January 21, 2019. Georgia was born on March 22, 1938 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas to Dave and Ella Purdiman. Georgia was the eldest of 13 siblings. She attended the Jonesboro Public School system in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In 1952, Georgia met and married James McElroy Sr. They left Cotton Plant, Arkansas and moved to Detroit, Michigan, to raise their children. They stayed together for 12 years, after which she met Hughlet Gwynn and together they raised seven children in a loving nurturing home. Hughlet and Georgia were together for 25 years until his death in 1984. Georgia mastered the art of entertaining. She was known for her weekend cook-outs. Whether it was fried fish and spaghetti, barbecue ribs, chicken with all the trimmings, or the best sweet potato pie in the world, all who came enjoyed a good meal. Georgia was quite the fisher-woman. She enjoyed casting her pole into a lake and watching the still quiet waters around her. Georgia loved to travel. Some of her favorite places to visit included Las Vegas, New Orleans, California, Florida, Baltimore, and Chicago. In the early 90’s, she discovered her love for cruising and went on over ten cruises. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her seven children: James McElroy (Lee), Gary McElroy (Mary), Kenneth McElroy, Barbara Hayward (Will), Brenda McElroy, Andre McElroy (Mazola), and Gloria Hodges; She had a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Her siblings: Willie (Wanda) Purdiman, Larry (Searcy) Purdiman, Elmo (Josephine) Purdiman, Alexander (Mary) Neal, Hosanna Gibson, and Elaine (Joe) Jackson. Proceeding her in death is her husband, James McElroy Sr., Hughlet Gwynn, Mother Ella Purdiman, Father Dave Purdiman, Her brothers Hurie Purdiman, Thurman Purdiman, Earnest Purdiman, Joshua Purdiman, sisters Rose Ella “Sue” Purdiman, LaVera “Pam” Jones, and her grandson Stephen Hogans. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that modeled the importance of family at all times.
